The new Area GPS is an extremely poor replacement for the the 296/495 series units. Probably designed for the weekend warrior that spends most of his time in a car.
Come on Garmin. Is this the best you can do??? Surely as the major supplier of aviation GPS units you can do better than this??

Jeff - the 796's have been "trickling" in since November 4th. We're optimistic that the frequency of shipments and the quantities of units in the shipments will increase starting this week (November 14th). All units we received were immediately re-packaged and shipped to those who pre-ordered. The fastest way to receive a 796 is to pre-order a unit. When your unit arrives, we will turn it around and ship it for free the same day.

Just purchased two 696's for our Falcon 900 and BE60 Duke. Fantastic upgrade from the 496's we had before. Quick question though, is it possible to load an entire airway into a flightplan instead of having to put in each fix seperately ? Example: coming out of Teterboro to LAX... Eliot J60 HCT is a frequent portion of the clearance... with an FMS (actually Foreflight does it to) you load the Jet or Victor airway and it loads all the fixes in between... Does the 696 do this ? If not, it really would be a great feature.. saves tons of time.

Great device at any rate !!

I do not like touchscreen as I generally sweat and I think it would be very difficult to touch in any rough weather.Yes I have a 496 and do not want to change.I would not take the new unit even if you swapped me even. I think you need new product research people. Have Fun Jerry

There are certainly some advantages for aera series compared to the 495/496 units, but in the end:
- the usable screen size of the aera units is not larger when you consider the size of the touchscreen buttons
- readability in direct sunlight exposure (and yes it also happens during flight) is much better on the 495/496 units
- battery life is short on the aera series and this is a critical argument when you are flying (5hrs vs 15hrs)
- aera is equiped with resistive touchscreens (generally used on cheap devices) which not comes close to what Apple is offering on it's products (capacitive touchsceens), as long as this is the case, I prefer the buttons on the 495/496 units

And no, I'm not a die hard fan of the 4xx series but they became very good over the multiple generations and I'm hoping for the next generation of the aera series to fix what seems inconvenient to me.

Hi Ashley,
Great question! Regarding the interfacing of the GPSMAP 696 and the GTX 330 used in conjuction with the GDL69 or 69A, this can be done with a power/data cable (bare wires cable). You will be able to display traffic (TIS-N) on your 696, and weather on your GNS 530 (I am assuming it's a WAAS-enabled 530).
Regarding the flight plans, you will not be able to "upload" a flight plan from a portable unit to a certified unit. There is only one NMEA connection cable that "talks" to the 696, and this would be taken up by the connection to the GTX 330 for traffic and weather.
Now about uploading a flight plan from a computer to the 696, this is possible however NOT recommended. The only software program is the Garmin Trip and Waypoint Manager, and this program does not have aviation data. It is recommended that you program your flight plan using your 696 and not upload via a PC.
Hope this helps!
Chuck

I have a Garmin 530 and a GTX 330. If I get the interface cable with the 696, will I be able to view traffic on the 696 and weather on the 530.
Flight plans: can I load a flight plan from the 696 to the 530 and vice versa? Can I load a flight plan from my PC to the 696 without using a (prohibitively expensive) datacard?

Greetings NOSIGN,
The checklist function is an awesome idea! Garmin has received this suggestion from several pilots, and this feature is currently under consideration for future development. Garmin has always been open to feedback and really does appreciate suggestions for product development and improvement. Keep it coming!
Best Regards,
Chuck
